An Interfaith Solidarity Gathering was held on Sunday, November 22, 2015.

Over 200 students, faculty and staff gathered in the chapel at 6 p.m. on Sunday evening November 22, 2015 for an Interfaith Gathering of Solidarity.  The gathering featured President Barry Glassner and Dean of Students Anna Gonzalez, along with a piano performance by Susan Smith and choral music by Cappella Nova directed by Kathy FitzGibbon. Students representing the following spiritual life groups participated by lighting unity candles and by giving prayers and readings: Interfaith Council, Hillel, Catholic Student Community, Spiritual Que(e)ry, Common Ground, Mystical Groves, the Buddhist Group, and the LC Christian Community (InterVarsity Christian Fellowship).

This Interfaith Solidarity Gathering was in response to the recent incidents of hate speech and assault.  Dean of Religious and Spiritual Life Mark Duntley and student Interfaith Coordinator Maggie Burks gave a welcome at the beginning of the event, and read the following statement:

We are deeply saddened by the verbal, written, and physical violence of the past days and by the perpetuation of fear.  We believe our community can and should stand together in solidarity with all who experience bigotry, hatred, and marginalization.   No one in our community should have to fear violence, exclusion or persecution.

As we seek meaningful change and healing, let us honor the basic tenets of others. Let us pray for understanding of the pain of others. Let us hear one another. Let us commit to creating real solutions that bring about a renewed and better college.  Let us all in solidarity help build a more just and peaceful community.
