Studying Slave Narratives
Open gallery

The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) has selected Associate Professor of English Rachel Cole to participate in an interdisciplinary seminar on slave narratives. After a competitive nomination and review process, 25 faculty members from institutions around the country were invited to participate in this course, which will take place this summer at Yale University.
Led by David W. Blight, Class of 1954 Professor of American History at Yale, the seminar will examine in depth both antebellum and postbellum narratives to “comprehend the lived experience of slaves…in the transition from bondage to freedom.” This work will complement Dr. Cole’s current research on personhood and how it is defined and figured in nineteenth-century American literature.
More information about Dr. Cole’s research is available here.
