March 31st System Outage

On Thursday, March 31st, Lewis & Clark experienced a broad and significant systems outage that lasted approximately 2.5 hours.  Affected systems included, Colleague, ImageNow, Informer, printing, VPN, wireless authentication and some phones.  However, the Internet, Moodle and LCFiles remained active during this time.

The system outage occurred during planned maintenance to upgrade the data center’s network switches.  During the upgrade, an unforeseen switch misconfiguration caused the various servers hosting the services above to be unreachable.  Recovering from this outage resulted in backing out of the changes and individually restoring the impacted systems.

Information Technology has taken preventive measures to correct this misconfiguration.  We will also need to plan a new maintenance window and work with our vendor to successfully perform the initial upgrades.
