Traffic Alert: SW Terwilliger Boulevard Sewer Project

Crews have installed about 3,000 linear feet of sewer pipe and nine manholes on SW Terwilliger Boulevard.

The City of Portland began construction in late November on 7,600 feet of an eight-inch sewer in Terwilliger Boulevard from SW Northgate Avenue to Highway 43

So far, crews have installed about 3,000 linear feet of sewer pipe and nine manholes on SW Terwilliger Boulevard.

Soupy soils and poor underground conditions have challenged progress. Project engineers are obtaining specialized equipment to complete the current portion on SW Terwilliger, south of SW Northgate Avenue.

Crews will continue installing sewer pipe and service connections on SW Terwilliger through late March.

In late-March and early-April, crews will work in Highway 43 for 24 hours a day, seven days a week to complete the highway phase as safely and efficiently as possible.

Neighbors should be prepared for construction to last until August 2017.

HIGHWAY 43 TRAFFIC CONTROL

·       Highway 43 will be reduced to one northbound lane and one southbound lane (see map). Work could take up to two months in order to install and connect the sewer under Highway 43.

·       There will be traffic delays during construction hours. Please use an alternate route if possible.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

Environmental Services continues construction on a project to install 7,600 feet of eight-inch sewer in Terwilliger Boulevard from SW Northgate Avenue to Highway 43. Crews will install one 48-inch manhole, one 60-inch manhole, and about 80 feet of pipe in Highway 43 between SW Terwilliger Blvd and SW E Avenue. The new Terwilliger sewer will connect to the 30-inch Tryon Interceptor sewer, which carries sewage to the Tryon Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in Lake Oswego. This improvement to the wastewater collection system will help protect water quality, public health, and the environment.
