For the 4th year the Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling is collaborating with Oregon Health & Science University’s “Teacher Institute for Immersion in Science” (TIES). TIES places middle school teachers in labs conducting biomedical research in order to learn about science from the perspective of the researcher. Recruited from rural schools, 12 teachers will reside on the Lewis & Clark campus for 8 days in July and shuttle daily to their research sites, learning not only about biomedical research itself but also the social and ethical dimensions of research with human and non-human primate subjects. Teachers return to their schools with curriculum plans for teaching about science with attention to the cultural aspects of research as well as how the biomedical science community ensures ethical conduct among experimenters.
