Professor Jan Pierce named Mentor of the Year by Oregon State Bar

December 06, 2017

Lewis & Clark Law professor Jan Pierce was named Mentor of the Year by the Oregon State Bar New Tax Lawyer Committee, which each year recognizes the efforts of one truly outstanding mentor.

Nominations are submitted by a person who has been mentored by the attorney, and the mentor-mentee relationship must be related to the practice of tax law.  Both the nominee and the nominating person must be members of the OSB Taxation Section.

“Jan is truly deserving of this honor,” said Jennifer Johnson, Dean of the Lewis & Clark Law School. “He has worked tirelessly with our students and young attorneys to help them navigate their way to successful careers in tax law.  We join all of his grateful mentees over the years in sending him congratulations.”

Jan R. Pierce, Lewis & Clark Clinical Professor of Law, joined the faculty in May 2000 after 27 years as an attorney with the Chief Counsel’s Office of the Internal Revenue Service. He supervises the law school’s Low Income Taxpayer Clinic, which gives students the opportunity to represent taxpayers of lesser means in controversies with the Internal Revenue Service, including audits and appeals before that agency, trials and hearings before the U.S. Tax Court, and appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
