Senior BCMB major, Rowan Gannon, is a coauthor of a study recently published in the Journal of Natural Products by a team of researchers in the Department of Chemical Biology and Therapeutics at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The paper details how anhydride derivatives of the tanshinones, potently and irreversibly inhibit human carboxylesterases. Tanshinones are compounds isolated from Salvia miltiorrhiza, a well-known herb used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Potent carboxylesterase inhibitors are sought after for their potential in modulating drug metabolism and reaction profiling.
