Comings and Goings Update: Get to Know Sarah Petrich

Several people have joined the community recently, and some continuing employees have taken on new roles and responsibilities at Lewis & Clark.

This fall, Sarah Petrich took on the role of associate director for Human Resources. Kris Codron, who served as associate director for Human Resources since 2005, will remain on the HR team as the training manager/leave administrator. Get to know Sarah in the following Q&A, and see the full comings and goings update below.

Tell us about your background and what part it played in leading you to this job.

I was born and raised in central Minnesota and moved to the beautiful Pacific Northwest 13 years ago. For most of those 13 years I have been in human resources in higher education. I worked at OHSU for 10 years, eight within the School of Nursing, and, most recently, at Marylhurst University for the last three years. While I am saddened by the closure of an historic institution of higher learning, I see working for Lewis & Clark as an opportunity to grow professionally while staying within the realm of a mission driven liberal arts institution. Working at Marylhurst directly influenced where I chose to focus my job search, which landed me here at Lewis & Clark and I could not be happier.

What is your greatest achievement to date?

While it was difficult, I see my most recent achievement as having helped more than 100 employees navigate through the university closure process with respect and integrity. By giving one-on-one time with each person, advocating for career coaching and transition resources, and holding many open sessions and workshops, I was able to help ease them through a very difficult time. Being in that role for the employees allowed them to process what the change meant for them personally in a safe atmosphere which then allowed them to continue to be present in their roles and work in a highly respectful and professional manner. I will always strive to achieve a reputation of being a trusted partner and advocate for employees.

What are your goals for your first year?

My main goal is to learn as much as I can about Lewis & Clark, in terms of the people, the culture and its history. Specifically, I want to get to know as many of the employees as possible in order to learn how I can assist them. I look forward to working with the talented HR team as well as to collaborating with individuals and departments across the campuses.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?

I enjoy exploring the great outdoors while hiking, backpacking and camping. My other favorite activities include yoga, gardening, knitting and seeing live music with good friends. My most recent interest is in taking weekly Spanish classes. ¡Espero conocer a todos!
