Julie Vorholt, who has taught in Academic English Studies (AES) since 2006, has just edited New Ways in Teaching Speaking (2nd edition) for the TESOL International Association. The New Ways series is a bestselling series consisting of lesson plan activities from English language teaching professionals from a wide variety of contexts.

This 286-page book includes over 100 speaking activities for students of all proficiency levels and all ages. New Ways in Teaching Speaking is divided into five major sections:

  1. Developing Fluency
  2. Developing Accuracy
  3. Developing Pronunciation
  4. Speaking in Specific Contexts
  5. Speaking and Technology

In addition to editing the book, Julie contributed her activity “Elevator Pitch Competition for Environmental NGOs” to the section on Spoken English for Academic and Professional Purposes. Julie created this activity for her ESL Environmental Issues course, which she designed during her tenure in AES.

When asked about her book, Julie said, “I greatly appreciate the 12 years (to date) that I have taught at Lewis & Clark College. I have met many wonderful people here and throughout my career. For that reason, I included my students in the Dedication, by expressing my respect for the relentless determination that they exhibit in pursuing their studies.”
