Important Marijuana Education for Faculty and Staff!
February 07, 2019
There are some clear relationships between marijuana use and student success. If faculty and staff want to support, educate, retain, and graduate our students, it is important that we all are prepared to have conversations with students about marijuana use.
On Wednesday, February 27, Wellness Services is sponsoring a visit to campus by Dr. Jason Kilmer. Dr. Kilmer, associate professor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington, is a nationally recognized expert on marijuana use among college students. Dr. Kilmer has served as an investigator on several studies evaluating prevention and intervention efforts for alcohol, marijuana, and other drug use by college students. He is also the assistant director of Health and Wellness for Alcohol and Other Drug Education in the Division of Student Life at the University of Washington. Dr. Kilmer has been project faculty for several national learning collaboratives in the United States, including NYU’s National College Depression Partnership, Dartmouth’s National College Health Improvement Program, and the NCAA’s 360 Proof project.
From 4-5 p.m. in Council Chamber in the Templeton Student Center on the undergraduate campus, Dr. Kilmer will present to faculty and staff (including graduate assistant staff) on the following topic. Faculty and staff from CAS, Law, GSEC and Common Services are invited!
Cannabis and the College Campus: Considering Impacts to Students in a Changing Legal Climate
Program description: Dr. Kilmer will review findings from scientific research about marijuana’s effects most relevant to college students and college campuses, review lessons learned after legalization, and consider suggestions/recommendations for the campus community.
Later, at 6:30 p.m. on February 27, Dr. Kilmer will present in Council Chamber to students from all three schools on:
From “the Munchies” to Memory Effects: What the Science Says about Marijuana
Program description: Is weed addictive? What does the science say about marijuana use and the effects on memory? How does cannabis use affect sleep quality? Get the answers to these (and your own) questions!
Wellness Services invites faculty and staff to Dr. Kilmer’s 4 p.m. talk, and also to refer students to the 6:30 p.m. program! Dr. Kilmer is an engaging, interesting, and science-based scholar and speaker, who has a lot to offer our community!
