Meet the Dean of Equity and Inclusion Finalist on Friday, May 17

You are invited to attend an open meeting with Mark Figueroa, finalist for the position of Dean of Equity and Inclusion, who will make a presentation followed by a Q&A session.

Dear Lewis & Clark Community,

On behalf of the search committee, I invite you to attend an open meeting with Associate Vice President for Institutional Research and Planning Mark Figueroa, the sole finalist for the position of Dean of Equity and Inclusion. This is a half-time position to be filled by a member of the Lewis & Clark community. Mark will make a presentation followed by a Q&A session this Friday, May 17 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in Gregg Pavilion.

We realize that this is not ideal timing or notice for many of you to meet the candidate in person. We have tried to balance the challenge of managing the search process with the need to continue the progress that has been made under Janet Steverson’s leadership and to sustain the momentum behind these efforts.

We have made arrangements for the session to be viewable via a one-way livestream feed at https://zoom.us/j/962807918. During the question-and-answer period, you will be able to use the chat feature to pose a question.

The candidate feedback form can be found in the related content box above and may be completed if you have attended the session and/or worked with Mark previously. If you return your feedback electronically, your form will be separated from your email address to maintain confidentiality.

The Dean of Equity and Inclusion fosters and supports the Lewis & Clark community through education, advocacy, and engagement. The goal of their work is for all members to feel recognized for who they are, challenged to venture from their comfort zone, and supported as they grow and learn.

The dean’s main responsibilities are the following:

  • serving as a member of the president’s Executive Council
  • providing internal and external leadership
  • assessing and improving campus culture on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • collaborating with and supporting faculty on curricular innovations related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • assisting with faculty, staff, and student recruitment and retention
  • supporting institution-wide professional development opportunities
  • managing the Office of Equity and Inclusion

Janet Steverson, our current dean of diversity and inclusion, will return full time to the Law School’s faculty on June 1 after three years of service. Please see the Diversity Report, 2017–19 to familiarize yourself with the state of our progress, programs, and resources.

We are grateful to the number of internal candidates who applied and who were reviewed by the search committee.

Thank you,

Scott Fletcher, Search Committee Chair and Dean of the Graduate School of Education and Counseling
