Lewis & Clark Hires Professor Lisa Benjamin
A globally recognized expert and scholar in energy, climate change, and corporate law, Lisa Benjamin is the newest faculty member of the law school, participating in both the Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law Program and the Center for Business Law and Innovation.
Her expertise allows Lewis & Clark to expand its curriculum, scholarship, and impact in areas such as international climate change law, energy transition, environmental justice, and corporate shareholder responsibility.
Benjamin received her LLB from University College London and her LLM with merit from the University of London. She received a PhD from the University of Leicester, where she won the Doctoral Inaugural Lecture Award in 2018. Benjamin practiced law both in her native Bahamas and in London before serving as an assistant professor in the LLB Programme of the University of the Bahamas. Before joining Lewis & Clark, she was teaching as a visiting professor at Penn State Law.
Benjamin has served on many of the most important boards and commissions relating to climate change. Most recently, she was appointed to be a member of the Compliance Committee of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for a three-year term from 2019 through 2021.
Benjamin has been a fellow on the Platform on International Energy Governance, a member of the Bahamas Trade Commission, and a member of the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law. She is the cofounder of the Climate Change Initiative, which is dedicated to research and education on climate change in small island states.
