Dr. Rajesh K. Reddy is stepping into a new role as the Global Animal Law and Advanced Degree Program Director for the Center for Animal Law Studies at Lewis & Clark Law School, after serving as the Animal Law LLM Program Director since 2018.

Dr. Rajesh K. Reddy is stepping into a new role as the Global Animal Law and Advanced Degree Program Director for the Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) at Lewis & Clark Law School, after serving as the Animal Law LLM Program Director since 2018.

“We are so excited for Raj to continue to oversee our one-of-a-kind Animal Law LLM Program and to build our expanding Global Animal Law Program as we work to train the next generation of animal law attorneys and advance the legal status of animals around the world,” says CALS’ Executive Director, Pamela Hart.

In his new role, Dr. Reddy will lead CALS’ Global Animal Law Program, including its bold new initiatives such as the Global Ambassador Program (the GAP). The GAP aims to leverage the expertise, training, and skills of CALS’ international Animal Law LLM alumni to foster and facilitate animal protection initiatives in their home countries and regions.

Dr. Reddy will also continue to lead the Animal Law LLM Program—the world’s first and only advanced legal degree program for animal law. To date, CALS has welcomed over 50 lawyers from more than 20 countries as experts in animal law. These alumni-in-action are improving the lives of animals across the world.

Prior to joining CALS, Dr. Reddy earned his JD from Lewis & Clark Law School and his PhD from the University of Georgia, where his dissertation scrutinized the representation of human and nonhuman animals in postcolonial literature and rights discourse. He has advanced human and nonhuman animal rights as part of his work for several nonprofits, including the Human Rights Law Network in New Delhi, India. In addition to the Animal Law LLM Seminar, Dr. Reddy teaches courses in International Animal Law and Animal Legal Philosophy.

About his new role, Dr. Reddy says: “I am inspired by our graduates and their commitment to changing the legal landscape for animals and cannot wait to see all that they will accomplish. I look forward to expanding our footprint as we effect positive changes for animals across the globe.”

The Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) was founded in 2008 with a mission to educate the next generation of animal law attorneys and advance animal protection through the law. With vision and bold risk-taking, CALS has since developed into a world-renowned animal law epicenter, with the most comprehensive animal law curriculum offered anywhere. In addition, CALS is the only program that offers an advanced legal degree in animal law and three specialty Animal Law Clinics. CALS is a fully self-funded nonprofit organization operating under the Lewis & Clark College 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, and is only able to provide these educational opportunities through donations and grants.
