LEWIS & CLARK THEATRE DEPARTMENT PRESENTS

Fall 2021 Main Stage Play

Directed by Rebecca Lingafelter

SYNOPSIS OF THE PLAY

Passion Play by Sarah Ruhl is an intimate epic which occurs at the timely intersection of politics and religion, centered on a community of players rehearsing their annual staging of the Easter Passion in three different eras: 1575 Northern England, just before Queen Elizabeth outlaws the ritual; 1934 Oberammergau, Bavaria, as Hitler is rising to power; and Spearfish, South Dakota, from the time of Vietnam through Reagan’s presidency. In each period, the players grapple with the transformative nature of art, and politics are never far in the background.

Our approach to the play is a contemplation and celebration of the practice of community. What do we owe to each other in times of crisis? What role does narrative, religion, and myth play in defining our choices, and is it possible to construct new narratives to hold our collective vision of possible futures? How does individual experience reflect or diverge from seismic historic change? What is the role of the theatre in examining these question? The production will focus on a “poor theatre” aesthetic, employing bold physicality and ensemble movement to create the diverse and rich worlds of Ruhl’s play.

The play has three acts which will be performed one act per night (Weds-Friday) and then a marathon of all three acts for the Saturday performances.
