Dr. Danielle Torres Begins Tenure as Dean of Equity and Inclusion

August 15 is Torres’s first day on the job. An accomplished scholar, researcher, and educator at the Graduate School of Education and Counseling, Torres was appointed to the deanship in late May.

Torres is a familiar face at Lewis & Clark, having joined the faculty at the graduate school in 2004. As she said upon her appointment, “I know firsthand what it means to feel like one of few,” Dr. Torres said. “That experience will be invaluable to me as I work with colleagues to ensure Lewis & Clark is a more equitable and welcoming institution for all faculty, staff, and students. I also embrace this new role as an opportunity to use my skills and experience as a counselor, educator, advocate and LC community member to promote innovative, compassionate and collaborative ways of engaging in and meeting our equity and inclusion goals across campus and in our broader Portland community.”

Torres joins the Office of Equity and Inclusion at a time of transition. Since August 8, Lori Makin-Byrd has serves as interim Title IX coordinator. Makin-Byrd is a Title IX expert who works with Grand River Solutions, a national Title IX consulting firm. Lewis & Clark has worked with Grand River Solutions for several years. Makin-Byrd will serve as Title IX coordinator until an ongoing appointment can be made, and can be reached at lmakin-byrd@lclark.edu.
