Fulbright Scholar Joins CALS Team to Support Online Degree Students

Hira Jaleel, LLM ’20 and Fullbright Scholar, joins us as our Animal Law Teaching Fellow. Hira will focus on engaging our online Animal Law degree students and enhancing our overall Animal Law Program.

Hira Jaleel has joined the Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) at Lewis & Clark Law School as an Animal Law Teaching Fellow. In her new role, Hira will support the Animal Law Program, with a primary focus on contributing to the success of the online courses in the Animal Law LLM and Animal Law MSL degree programs.

Hira is a Pakistani lawyer and 2020 alum of the Animal Law LLM Program, where she was a Fulbright Scholar and recipient of the Animal Law LLM Leadership Award. She received her B.A-LL.B (Hons.) from the Lahore University of Management Sciences. She was selected as a CALS Global Ambassador to create a project to advance animal law in Pakistan. She brought that project to fruition by recently developing and teaching Pakistan’s first animal law course.

“We are thrilled to have Hira join our team,” says CALS Executive Director and Assistant Dean, Pamela Hart. “Hira brings international animal law and litigation experience, as well as enthusiasm and passion for animal law advocacy and education. I look forward to all she will contribute to the success of our animal law program, including sharing her experience and expertise with our students, faculty and burgeoning advanced degree program.”

Prior to joining CALS, Hira previously worked as a Senior Associate at Axis Law Chambers - a full service corporate and commercial law firm in Lahore, Pakistan. As part of her practice, she regularly advised clients on animal-related legal issues, including issuing advice on the legal rights of clients threatened with eviction and seizure of their companion animals by housing authorities, advising on the prosecution of animal abuse cases, and assisting animal welfare nonprofits regarding registration and regulatory compliance issues. Hira has worked with all four provincial governments in Pakistan to update their animal welfare legislation. Hira has also been a consultant for Pakistan’s Federal Ministry of National Food Security & Research, and has worked on a new Federal Animal Health Bill for Pakistan in collaboration with the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Hira also routinely writes on animal welfare issues and has been published in various news publications in Pakistan, the US, and the UK.

About her new role, Hira says: “Animal law has been my passion since law school, and I’m over the moon at this opportunity to further contribute to animal law education by working with the Center for Animal Law Studies. I am very excited to embark on this new journey!”

The Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) was founded in 2008 with a mission to educate the next generation of animal law advocates and advance animal protection through the law. With vision and bold risk-taking, CALS has since developed into a world-renowned animal law epicenter, with the most comprehensive animal law curriculum offered anywhere. In addition, CALS is the only program that offers two advanced legal degrees in animal law (an LLM degree and a Master of Studies degree for non-lawyers, both degrees are offered in person and online) and multiple animal law clinics and experiential learning opportunities. CALS’ Alumni-in Action from more than 20 countries are advancing legal protections and making a difference in the lives of animals around the world.
