Increase to Salary Pool

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I’m excited to be writing my first communication to faculty and staff as president of Lewis & Clark. I am eagerly looking forward to my first academic year in this new role, and do so with a great deal of hope and optimism.

There are many reasons I am so optimistic. Enrollment at the College of Arts and Sciences remains on course to exceed our ambitious goals for a second year in a row. The Law School will enroll another strong class this year and we are looking forward to completing construction on two major projects at the Graduate School, the new Graduate Commons and a new parking lot. Advancement has raised another $2 million since June, moving us closer to our $155 million capital campaign goal. And we finished out the last fiscal year in a much stronger financial position than budgeted, due to both strong enrollment and lower than expected expenses.

None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff. These past two and a half years have been extraordinarily difficult. Nonetheless, we are entering a new academic year in a stronger position than has been the case for several years. This success is a direct result of your hard work.

Because of that success, I am happy to be able to increase the pool available in all three schools for faculty and exempt staff salary increases in 2022–23. As you may know, the budget for this year contemplated a 3 percent salary raise pool. We are now able to increase that pool to 4 percent, which is the largest salary increase pool available for these groups for many years. I am particularly glad to be able to do so in the current inflationary environment.

As is typically the case at Lewis & Clark, salary increases for faculty and exempt staff will be effective September 1. Vice presidents and deans are being asked to work with their units over the next several weeks on the implementation and distribution of the raise pool within their units. Individual salary letters will be provided soon after.

Thank you again for all you do every day to make Lewis & Clark strong. I look forward over the next weeks and months to seeing many of you and being able to thank you in person for your many contributions to Lewis & Clark.
