ONE L&C Champion - Shanta Calem

Administrative Specialist and Adjunct Faculty Shanta CalemONE L&C Champions are Lewis & Clark employees who’ve been nominated by their peers and recognized for their efforts towards strengthening the community here at Lewis & Clark. We recognize Shanta Calem for her efforts and believe that she is a great example of what it means to be a Champion.

As her nominator describes it, “Shanta is a consistent and tireless advocate for inclusivity and community building at the Grad School. She has volunteered to lead staff meetings, and over time has brought in faculty and staff from the grad school and the broader institution, to present their expertise. Not only does this help us get to know and learn from each other, this builds expertise in the staff, who gain a better understanding of our workplace. Shanta has connected with the GSEC Diversity Committee to find ways for staff to support the committee’s equity commitments at the Grad School. She consistently advocates for her coworkers in these and other channels at L&C. Throughout all of this, Shanta always brings her authentic, thoughtful and honest presence. She is a trusted friend and true leader.”

We appreciate her dedication to the people of Lewis and Clark. As the Administrative Specialist for the Teacher Education Department in the grad school, ensuring folks are supported and have the tools they need to succeed is important to Shanta. “I used to be a teacher myself, but I prefer to be behind the scenes supporting faculty and students. I’m also the grad school union representative and a member of the Staff Leadership Team. Both roles enable me to advocate for staff and elevate their voices which I find very rewarding.”
