48th Annual Throckmorton Lecture

Dr. Robert Pamplin Jr. Professor of History Stephen Beckham will offer the 48th annual Arthur L. Throckmorton lecture. His presentation, “Adam Clark Vroman, 1856-1916” will address the challenges of historical research using photographic sources. Vroman participated in Smithsonian expeditions to the Rio Grande pueblos and photographed Yosemite Valley and all the missions in California. Beckham’s work on Vroman commenced forty years ago with 197 lanternslides and boxes of glass plate negatives. He has subsequently found Vroman’s travel diaries, hundreds of his letters, and details about this photographer’s life and labors.

Educated at UCLA, Stephen Beckham has taught at Lewis & Clark College since 1977. He has done pioneering research, writing, and teaching on the history of Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest, the American West, and the environment. He is a former “Oregon Professor of the Year” and a recipient of the American Historical Association’s Asher Distinguished Teaching Award.
