What’s your favorite class? How has it expanded your knowledge?

Software Development with Professor Peter Drake has been my favorite course. It has taken many abstract, theoretical concepts learned in past computer science courses and applied them in a “real world” context where we work to deliver a product to an actual customer. It has better prepared myself and other students for applications of CS we will encounter in our future endeavors once we leave L&C.

Who is your mentor on campus? Why do you consider this person your mentor?

I have developed many meaningful relationships here at Lewis & Clark College. Randall Jackson, my assistant coach on the men’s basketball team, has played a pivotal role in my development in the last few years. He has been there for me from the moment I stepped on campus to provide me with advice from his own life experiences to help me navigate the challenges I have encountered. I have had more conversations than I can recall that have lasted numerous hours with him. More than the advice, mentorship, and support he has provided me with, it is our friendship that I cherish the most as he is like an older brother to me.  

What made you want to come to Lewis & Clark?

Following my time at my past school prior to L&C, I was missing the college experience I was looking for. As that school was largely a commuter school, there was no intellectual engagement outside of classes that I desired, and it was also difficult to form lasting relationships as it seemed most people were simply there to “get a degree.” Moreover, after taking a break from basketball after high school, I was missing competing in the game I had grown to love. For these two reasons, I decided to attend L&C: to participate in collegiate athletics and engage in a more intellectually stimulating community where I could grow as well meet new people.

Why did you choose to transfer to Lewis & Clark? How is Lewis & Clark supporting you as a transfer student?

I primarily transferred to Lewis & Clark to play basketball for the school. Although I came for athletics, I found so much more. I have made genuine friendships with people that I feel go beyond sports and will be lifelong relationships. Moreover, I would add that the best way Lewis & Clark has supported me as a transfer student has been by not treating me like one. I have been welcomed into the existing community and accepted as an “original” Pioneer from day one, which has aided my integration into the culture of this great school. I am not viewed as a transfer student; I don’t feel like one!

What’s your favorite spot on campus?

Pamplin Sports Center or my dorm with my roommates.

What advice do you have for prospective students?

Have an open mind. Prior to attending L&C, I was a little bit apprehensive about how my time here would be because I had the wrong impression of the school given what I had heard from others. Lewis & Clark College might be labeled as a beautiful school with an eccentric student body; however, this school is so much more than that. Once I realized that, I grew to love and appreciate this school remarkably more. This school has so much to offer, and will set you up to be successful in the future and prepare you for what lies ahead. Not only am I confident that anyone can flourish and prosper after attending L&C, but I am confident that this school will help you find “your” people, and give you some of the most memorable years of your life.

What’s your best Lewis & Clark memory so far?

I cannot pinpoint one memory, in particular, that is the “best” I have of L&C, but all the laughs with my teammates are definitely the moments I have enjoyed the most. We have built a brotherhood that transcends basketball. Of course, if I had to pick one specific instance, the trip to Hawai‘i with my teammates is one I will never forget.

How do you manage stress?

Everyone has their own ways for handling stress, but for me listening to music, talking to my friends, and working out usually provides relief during these times.

How has Lewis & Clark changed you?

Through the amazing people I have met here, this school has really given me perspective on life. I used to think in one dimension, but after my interactions and conversations with people outside of the classroom here, I see things in a new light. I am extremely grateful and humbled by the opportunity and experience Lewis & Clark has provided me with.
