What was your favorite class? How did it expand your knowledge?

Organic chemistry with Casey Jones. I didn’t like chemistry coming into college, but that has changed! I love going to the lab and making chemical compounds out of mechanisms that we have discussed in lecture. So rad! Additionally, the conference portion of class is great because I get to sit down and grind out some problems, which solidifies the concepts in my head. If I ever get lost, I can just ask Casey, friends, or the class TA.

Who is your mentor on campus? Why do you consider this person your mentor?

I really don’t have a mentor. There is not one person from which I would want advice about everything. I do have an awesome group of friends that I can lean on for support.

What made you want to come to Lewis & Clark?

The campus beauty and location initially attracted me to the college. Coming from the midwest, going out west seemed like an adventurous opportunity that I could not pass up. What makes me want to stay, however, is the people that I have met. I have never met so many like-minded individuals as I have here, and I am glad I get to share so many experiences with them.

How do you describe the liberal arts?

I think of the liberal arts as a setting in which there is an excellent support system aiding you as perspectives are challenged and changed. It’s exciting, difficult, and rewarding.

If you have studied or will study overseas while at Lewis & Clark, how did you choose your program? What did your overseas study add to your L&C experience so far?

I plan on studying abroad in Australia for the 2021 spring program. This program is designed for biology and biochem majors, which I like because I can work towards my major while being abroad. Australia’s unique wildlife was a big factor in my decision to apply for the program because I love evolutionary science and can’t wait to learn more about the evolution of marsupials and the niches they fill.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Portland?

Portland is in a great location for many outdoor activities. I can go to the coast to hang out on the beaches and hike, or I can go towards Mt. Hood and ski. There is great fishing everywhere, even close to the city.

What advice do you have for prospective students?

Step out of your comfort zone.
