Galen Lee Bland JD ’82 died unexpectedly February 19, 2020, at St. Vincent Hospital in Beaverton, Oregon, surrounded by his wife and children. He was 70.

Born August 24, 1949, to Richard and Betty Bland, Galen was raised in Hutchinson, Kansas. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in journalism and was a newspaper editor in that state before moving with his wife, Patty, to Oregon. There, he worked as an attorney, business consultant, and teacher.

Galen’s greatest passion in life after his family was baseball. He started coaching in the mid-80s, and his gentle spirit, quiet humor, and enthusiasm for youth baseball will always be remembered.

He is survived by Patty, with whom he enjoyed 49 loving years; daughter Kelly Muskat and son Darren Bland; grandchildren Samuel, Patrick, Gabby, Haley, and Drew; sister Marcia Bickel; and mother, as well as many other family members and friends.
