Chris Ohman ’77
Chris graduated in 1977 in economics. He enjoyed two Lewis & Clark off campus study programs, including a quarter in Washington, D.C studying US government, and interning with a Congressman. He finished his Lewis & Clark years on a study abroad program in South Korea and Japan.
After working in politics and public policy for several years, Chris earned a Master’s degree in Public Affairs from the Princeton University School of Public and International Affairs. Subsequently, Chris spent nine years as a banker with The Chase Manhattan Bank, before discovering a deep interest in the financing and delivery of health care. For the past 25 years, he has been an executive with health plans and a medical group seeking to advance population based health care. This includes nearly four years as the President and CEO of the California Health Plans Association during a period when the California governor advanced a “Massachusetts” style health care reform program. Before retiring, Chris was an executive with Kaiser Permanente, responsible initially for health plan operations in Kaiser’s regions outside of California, and later supporting Kaiser’s drive to enter new markets.
Presently, Chris advises and coaches senior executives, lectures on health care policy and strategy, and is an avid hiker, skier and fisherman. You can find him many winter days teaching skiing or skiing with friends and family at Big Sky Resort in Montana.
Chris serves on the board, and is Board Secretary, of La Clinica de La Raza, a Federally Qualified Health Center providing health care for some 100,000 low income residents of the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area. He has served on a host of for-profit and nonprofit boards, including a health care start up advancing office based surgery, Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, a San Francisco homeless services organization, and the American Heart Association of Los Angeles.
