Backpack Mt. St. Helens- moved to Badger Creek Wilderness due to snow pack

  • Image shows a person wearing a backpacking pack and a bright yellow shirt giving "thumbs up" to the camera. Another person stands to their right wearing a grey baseball hat and a backpacking backpack. They are also smiling at the camera. In the background, there are dusty hills and a mountain range.
  • Image shows a group of nine people in a line across the bottom of the photo posing excitedly with their hands in the air. Behind them is a view of Mt. St. Helens.
  • Image shows three people hiking away from the camera on the left side of the image. On the right side of the image is a hillside dotted with purple wildflowers and a clear blue sky is above them.
  • Image shows a  portrait of a person wearing sunglasses leaning against a red backpack posing with a peace sign with their left hand. They have thick white sunblock covering the top half of their face like a mask.

Snowpack is higher than normal this year, and a scouting trip on 4/29/21 determined the snow is too deep on trails in the lower elevations at Mt St Helens.  This trip will visit the Badger Creek Wilderness Area instead.  See related description of Badger Creek Backpack for more details.

Old description for Mt St Helens:  This still-active volcano, less than 2 hours north of Portland, is spectacular in mid May. Snow still lingers at the mid and upper elevations, but the lower elevations are bursting with purple lupine flowers, wild rhododendron blooms, and a cacophony of emerald green. Waterfalls and bubbling springs are waiting to be discovered on this backpack trip, on trails traversing the mountain, toying with the snowline, and visiting some of the areas still recovering from the massive 1980 eruption. Each day we’ll hike through this remarkable landscape carrying everything we need on our backs, and sleep in tents at night. Read the detailed trip description to learn more.
