Harry M. Hanna JD ’66 passed away on Thanksgiving, November 25, 2021, surrounded by family.

Harry was born in Portland on January 13, 1936, to Joseph and Amelia (Rask) Hanna. He attended Central Catholic High School, the University of Portland (while enlisted in the Oregon National Guard), and the University of Oregon before enrolling in law school.

Harry met the love of his life, Patsy Shelly, while a teenager working at his dad’s grocery store in Southeast Portland. They married in 1967 and welcomed the birth of their son Harry Hanna Jr. in 1975.

Harry worked for the Port of Portland while a law student and became the manager of Portland International Airport. He was admitted to the Oregon State Bar and Oregon Supreme Court in 1966, and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1971. Harry practiced in Portland for over 55 years, specializing in real estate and estate planning. He was with the law firm of Sussman Shank until the time of his passing, where he enjoyed the wonderful attorneys and staff. Harry also served as a pro tem judge and taught at Lewis & Clark Law School.

Family was always the center of life for Harry. He loved going to his grandkids’ events and never missed a chance to be with them. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing; trips to Hawaii; Giants baseball games; playing tennis; and Patsy’s cooking. He cherished time with his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. Harry was also a member of numerous organizations and boards over the years, including Emanuel Hospital, East Portland Rotary Club, Life Flight Development Committee, and Central Catholic High School.

Harry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patsy; son Harry Jr.; grandchildren Harry III, Rachelle, Michael, and Luke; brothers Don and Joe; brother-in-law Ron Wilkinson; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe; mother, Amelia; and sister, Marlene.
