Elizabeth Doern Martin

Elizabeth Doern Martin BA ’58, MA ’75 was a member of Lewis & Clark’s rally squad in 1955. An elementary education major, she accepted a Lambda fraternity pin in spring 1956 and was engaged by Christmas of 1956. She married John Martin BS ’56 in June 1957. With the help of then-President Morgan Odell, she was admitted to Occidental College for her senior year and graduated at the top of her class. After receiving many job offers, she chose one in Arcadia, California, and taught for three years before starting her family. When her husband 
became involved in NASA and the Mariner mission to Venus, the family moved to Cape Canaveral, Florida. Later, after receiving her MA, she taught school for 20 years in Tigard, Oregon, and taught summer sessions in classroom management at Lewis & Clark. After retiring from teaching, she supervised student teachers for Lewis & Clark’s education department. She has also 
done work for the Portland Development Commission 
and the Portland Art Museum. Martin has two children and four grandchildren. She has enjoyed a life of travel around the world and has skied most of the downhill slopes in western America.
