Nicole Aas-Rouxparis

Professor Emerita of French - In Memoriam

Nicole Aas-Rouxparis, a native of Algeria, received her PhD in Romance languages and Literatures at the University of Oregon in 1984, with a specialization in the contemporary novel. She joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor of French in 1989. Her research interests included postcolonial studies, Québec writers, and Francophone literature of the Caribbean, the Maghreb and Sub-Saharan Africa, with a special focus on minority voices and gender issues. Professor Aas-Rouxparis published a book on French New Novelist Claude Ollier, and many articles on writers and filmmakers from Québec (Marie-Claire Blais, Madeleine Monette, Emile Ollivier, Pierre Nepveu), the Caribbean (Gisèle Pineau, Maryse Condé, Nadine Magloire), and Africa (Ousmane Sembène, Camara Laye, Assia Djebar). She was interested in postcolonial issues of immigration and exile as expressed in literature and film. She received the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Professor of the Year award for the State of Oregon in 2002.
