Professional Development for English Teachers

Language teachers can benefit from our AES program in several ways. You may join AES classes as an observer or participant and experience teaching methods from a student’s perspective. Then join TESL/TEFL seminar and workshop courses to learn more and apply language theory and current methodologies to your own teaching environment.  AES faculty all have master’s degrees in teaching English as a second language.

Sample seminar/workshop topics:

  • Reading theories and applications

  • Principles of adult learning

  • Teaching skill areas: listening, writing, reading, speaking

  • Classroom management

  • Technology and teaching

Teacher Experiences

Feiyan Kong

Visiting Scholar from Hangzhou, China

“I’m Feiyan, a visiting scholar from China. The time I spent in AES in Lewis & Clark is super rewarding as both an observer and a participator in courses such as Reading, Communication Skills, Writing as well as Higher Education. What impressed me deeply is every instructor in AES has a flexibly systematic course schedule and is so creative and passionate that students participate in group discussion pretty enthusiastically and spontaneously; what’s more, all students are inspired
to foster critical thinking while learning English as a second language both linguistically and culturally.

As a college English teacher in China, I found my experience in AES really helpful in updating my knowledge in course schedules, group activities, teaching methods, online assignments and so on, not to mention the picturesque and tranquil campus with castle-like buildings, charming teachers and upbeat students.”

Demet Pek

Visiting Language Assistant from Munich, Germany

Demet participated in one of our content courses, “Technology and Society.”  This is what she has to say about her experience and how it helped her as a future teacher:
“Julie is a great, fully motivated instructor. She has done an amazing job tailoring the course to the students enrolled. This is particularly difficult because we are all at different levels of English. I can see that she put a lot of effort into each class (very good materials, latest videos, connection to the LC I.T. etc.) and takes her job very seriously. Julie also did an anonymous survey on the class, so that we could give important feedback before the end of the semester. I really appreciated this act. I am very impressed by her knowledge and dedication, and I don’t only learn as a student but also as a future teacher. The college is extremely lucky to have her.”
