Fulbright Grants

The US Congress created the Fulbright Program to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchanges. The Fulbright U.S. Student program sends recent alums and graduate students to over 140 nations around the world for nine-month English teaching assistantships or study/research grants which allow students to devise and pursue research projects of their own. Fulbright also sponsors a year (and sometimes two years) of graduate education in select countries. These applications usually require two applications–one to Fulbright, and one to the designated graduate school.

To learn more about Fulbright’s various offerings around the world, visit the Fulbright U.S. Student program website.

For more information about applying through Lewis & Clark, please contact Lewis & Clark’s FPA (Fulbright Program Assistant, Therese Augst (taugst@lclark.edu).

Campus Contact/ Application Process/ This Year's Deadline:

Meet your Lewis & Clark Fulbright Program Advisor!

Therese Augst, Associate Professor of German, has taught German language, literature, and culture at Lewis & Clark since 2008. She also teaches regularly in the Core and Gender Studies programs. A passionate advocate of intercultural exchange, Therese has advised many students seeking post-graduate fellowships abroad and enjoys helping applicants develop their ideas into compelling projects.

LEWIS & CLARK COLLEGE internal deadline: September 11, 2023, 5:00 p.m.; the final national Fulbright Deadline is Tuesday, October 10, 2023, 2:00 p.m. local time.

Your Fulbright application and all supporting documents, including letters of affiliation and transcripts, must be submitted electronically. Please read the entire instruction sheet.

To be completed by August 10, 2023:

Decide which country you are applying to and for what program. If you haven’t already done so, open an application on the Fulbright website.

For study/research grant: You should have a well-vetted grant proposal that various mentors have already critiqued. Ideally, you will also have identified an in-country sponsor who can provide a letter of affiliation.

Select three references who know you well enough to write a strong letter of recommendation. Overseas program leaders, coaches, professors, internship supervisors, employers, choir or orchestra directors - all of these could be strong reference. If you have questions about whom to ask, contact Prof. Augst for advice.

Get in touch with your three references, provide them with some information about yourself and your recent activities, let them know what you are applying for, and ask them if they are willing/able to write for you by the internal deadline.

Contact Lewis & Clark’s Fulbright Advisor Therese Augst (taugst@lclark.edu) to express your intent to submit a Fulbright application through Lewis & Clark College. Please provide names and contact information for the three referees you have asked to write for you.

Submit the names of your three recommenders to Therese Augst (taugst@lclark.edu) by August 10, 2023. Register your recommenders on your Fulbright application. They will receive a link to the portal, where they may submit their letters, ideally by the campus deadline of September 11, 2023.

Transcript(s): Please plan to obtain an official transcript to submit with the rest of your materials. Although Fulbright only requires unofficial transcripts, the unofficial transcript from Lewis & Clark does not provide sufficient information by Fulbright’s standards. You may scan and upload the official transcript (along with transcripts from other institutions you’ve attended) to your application. This should be completed by the LC deadline.

Overseas affiliation (if required): Establish contact(s) in your host country and obtain a letter from that contact for inclusion in your Fulbright application. Interviews take place in late September/early October. Your application will be reviewed by a small faculty committee from a broad range of academic disciplines. The resulting evaluation of your application will be sent to Fulbright by our office. The committee will provide you with feedback for revising your essays. After the interview, you will have approximately one week to make final changes to your application before submitting revisions to your designated faculty reader & the LC Fulbright Program Advisor. Your faculty reader should approve the final essays before you post them on your Fulbright application to complete your application in time for the final submission deadline of October 10, 2023, 2:00 p.m. PST.  (You will be responsible for coordinating with your reader so that you can meet this deadline, which may in some cases mean forgoing the final reader approval.)

The College evaluation of your application will be sent to Fulbright separately by our office.

Applying from a Distance: Fulbright requires enrolled students to submit applications to the campus Fulbright Program Advisor by the campus deadline. If you are unable to be present in person for an interview during this period, you may still submit an application. Zoom interviews and feedback will be provided.

• Alumni Applications: Fulbright expects enrolled students to submit applications via the campus Fulbright Program Advisor and campus deadline. Lewis & Clark graduates who are no longer enrolled during Fall 2023 may participate in the campus review process (submit application to Lewis & Clark by campus deadline), thus benefiting from the feedback, revision, and evaluation process.

Seniors and recent graduates are invited to apply. In some countries, applicants must have sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country to communicate with the people and to carry out the proposed study.
