Rachel Guthrie JD ’12 established the American Wolf Foundation on March 15, 2018. The foundation will provide support to partner organizations doing on-the-ground research into and conservation of endangered American wolves, starting with the critically endangered red wolf. It will also focus on outreach, education, and coexistence initiatives to shape public perception in advance of a new red wolf reintroduction effort. The organization plans to follow a model similar to that of the Mexican Wolf Fund, which provides support to affected ranchers and landowners in an effort to foster collaboration. In the short term, the American Wolf Foundation may also fund additional captive breeding of the red wolf. Guthrie’s ultimate goal is to build the foundation into a substantial endowment fund to provide permanent support for all American canid conservation efforts.
