Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: The Science Communication Assistant will support the Science Communication Events Lead in pre-, post-, and day-of events coordination with Science Communication Fellows and internal OMSI departments to ensure a positive experience for museum visitors and Fellows. Participate in programs/initiatives to enhance corporate culture, such as: • Working effectively with and supporting volunteers throughout the organization • Supporting OMSI’s Total Guest Experience (TGE)/Customer Service mission & objectives in daily job performance, including diversity initiatives

EXPERIENCES THIS POSITION WILL PROVIDE: • Assist in pre-event communication with Science Communication Fellows and internal OMSI departments as determined by the Science Communication Events Lead • Attend and support Meet a Scientist events, held at OMSI on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month • Assist with set-up and breakdown of Meet a Scientist and other related events • Ensure a positive experience for museum visitors and Science Communication Fellows during events by providing excellent customer service and supporting OMSI’s Total Guest Experience • Strategize and brainstorm with Science Communication Events Lead to implement ideas to enhance the event experience for Science Communication Fellows and visitors • Assist with the preparation and execution of event operations and support with ease if unexpected issues may arise • Provide encouragement and support to Science Communication Fellows throughout event • Assist in post-event communication with Science Communication Fellows as determined by the Science Communication Events Lead

Job Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: What we are looking for: • Strong communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills • Self-directed and willing to take initiative • Attention to detail • Professional attitude, friendly demeanor • Able to take photographs and log visitor counts throughout events • Able to administer visitor surveys when needed • Must be dependable, punctual, and willing to commit to a schedule • Interest in informal science education

TRAINING YOU WILL RECEIVE: • General informal science education philosophies and pedagogy • Develop science communication skills by participating in Science Communication Fellowship training(s) • Culturally responsive facilitation strategies • Museum safety and emergency response

LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Project Coordination • Cross-Departmental Collaboration • Introduction to Science Communication techniques

Hours/Shifts: Meet a Scientist: o Second and fourth Saturdays of every month January–October o Second Saturdays of every month November–December o Meet a Scientist events run from 1:00 – 4:00 pm for the public; staff should expect to work 10:30am – 4:30pm Other work duties can be completed anytime Monday–Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm • Additional Science Communication Fellowship events happen sporadically throughout the year, usually on a weekday evening, and will be scheduled with at least a month’s notice • Science Communication Fellowship workshops happen three times a year, and are scheduled months in advance

Pay: $12.50/hr
