    Each year, undergraduate students across departments have the opportunity to participate in the John S. Rogers Science Research Program, which supports collaborative scientific research with Lewis & Clark faculty. At this year’s virtual presentations, projects ranged from an interactive game on earthquake preparedness to analysis on ideologies surrounding color blindness and racial passing.

    Anne McHugh BA ’10 has been awarded the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2019 Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators for her work as a science teacher at Portland’s Franklin High School. One of only 11 winners nationally of the highly competitive award and the only winner selected from the Pacific Northwest region, her teaching spans from arachnid biodiversity to aquaponics systems, allowing students to collaborate in innovative research with NASA.

    Talia Lichtenberg BA ’20 is the recipient of a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, the preeminent award for undergraduates in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics. A native of West Linn, Oregon, Talia is majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology with the intent of pursuing a PhD in molecular biology, specializing in Alzheimer’s disease and related neurodegenerative diseases.

    Assistant Professor of Biology Norma Velazquez-Ulloa has been awarded a competitive New Investigator grant from the Medical Research Foundation, funded by OHSU. With the funding, she will continue her research: identifying genes that mediate the effects of developmental nicotine exposure.

    Professor of Chemistry Louis Kuo has been awarded a $249,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. The grant will fund Kuo’s ongoing student-supported research into environmental toxin remediation and phosphorus recovery. The research he and his students are doing aims to better degrade neurotoxins found in pesticides and chemical weapons.

    At Lewis & Clark, where students learn science by doing science, collaborative research with professors is an academic hallmark. The John S. Rogers Science Program supports several such projects each summer, and this year included multidisciplinary research with an especially timely goal: create a computer game that will teach users how to act in the aftermath of a natural disaster.
