Student Health Insurance Waiver for Academic Year 2020-21 Now Available
Updated July 11, 2020: With a few exceptions (see details below), all undergraduate and law students are automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan each fall and spring semester. Click on this link if you are an undergraduate or law student with other comparable health insurance coverage, and you wish to waive enrollment in the student health insurance plan. Students who do not complete a waiver will be enrolled in and charged for student health insurance. This year’s waiver deadline is September 14! Students enrolled in the Graduate School of Education & Counseling (GSEC) are NOT automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan, so do not need to complete this waiver. Trouble completing the waiver? Please contact Marjorie Reedy at firstname.lastname@example.org or 503-768-7160.
Student Health Insurance Webinar Recording: On July 31, staff provided a webinar for parents of new students related to student health insurance issues, including how to waive out of the plan. We invite parents of all new students to view the webinar at this link!
COVID-19 Coverage, Updated August 10, 2020
- PacificSource—the carrier for the Lewis & Clark student health insurance plan— is eliminating out-of-pocket costs for coronavirus (COVID-19) testing and diagnosis (testing and diagnosis is covered at 100% when in-network) and related visits for their members. (Applicable diagnosis codes: B97.29, Z03.818, Z20.828 and U07.1) This out-of-pocket cost waiver has been extended through December 31, 2020.
- If diagnosed and additional treatment is required, those services would be considered based on the plan benefits.
- PacificSource will allow a one-time early refill for prescription drugs, in addition to covering immunizations when made available.
The PacificSource provider network includes more than 46,300 in-network practitioners and facilities in Idaho, Montana, and Oregon, and in Clark, Cowlitz, Klickitat, Pacific, Skamania, and Wahkiakum counties in Washington. If student subscribers need care outside of these network areas, a robust national network of providers is available through the First Health and First Choice Health networks. Visit this website to find an in-network provider in the United States.
If you have NOT been enrolled in student health insurance for spring semester, but have recently lost health insurance coverage, and you are thinking you might want to enroll in the student health insurance program, please contact Kerry Barnes in Student Accounts at 503-768-7830.
All degree-seeking and visiting undergraduate and law students are required to have health insurance that is comparable to the student health insurance plan offered by the College.* Students enrolled in the Academic English Studies program are also held to this insurance requirement. This requirement also applies to students participating in Lewis & Clark Overseas and Off-Campus Programs, both international and domestic.
*Law students enrolled in the distance learning LLM program are the sole exception to this requirement. These students are not required to have health insurance, and are not allowed to enroll in the student health insurance program.
*If you are a visiting student from Hoksuei Gakuen, Waseda, SACM, the Embassy of Kuwait, Rikkyo or Konkuk, you will have health insurance coverage through your sponsoring organization so you will not be enrolled in student health insurance. You do not need to complete a waiver.
Lewis & Clark does NOT enforce a health insurance requirement for students in the Graduate School for Education and Counseling (GSEC), though GSEC students are strongly encouraged to have health insurance. GSEC students may voluntarily enroll in the student health insurance program.
With the exceptions identified above, all degree-seeking and visiting undergraduate and law students are automatically enrolled in (and charged for) student health insurance. However, if these students have other health insurance coverage that is comparable** to the student health insurance plan, they may waive enrollment in the student health insurance plan. Undergraduate and law students have just one opportunity at the start of each academic year to complete their online waiver and decline coverage for the academic year. (Students participating in an Overseas and Off-Campus Program should click here to learn about the additional waiver options that apply to them.) Students who complete the waiver process will not be enrolled in or charged for student health insurance.
**Please note that Oregon and Washington Medicaid participants generally qualify to waive enrollment in the student health insurance program, but Medicaid participants from other students often do NOT qualify to waive student health insurance. For individuals with Medicaid outside of Oregon or Washington, please click here for more information.
Note: The above information applies to fall and spring semester only. Students attending summer session are NOT required to have health insurance, although it is strongly encouraged. For students enrolling in student health insurance, summer coverage is automatically included with spring coverage.
For students who are graduating:
Please note that students who are graduating cannot extend their insurance beyond the end of the policy period. (For example, students who graduate in May cannot extend their coverage past August 14.)
Students enrolled in the Graduate School of Education & Counseling:
Graduate (GSEC) students who wish to enroll in coverage should contact USI NW and talk to Mike Pigou at 503-417-9235. GSEC students must enroll within 31 days from the effective date of coverage each semester (fall semester deadline is October 1, 2020 and spring semester deadline is February 1, 2021). It is their responsibility to purchase coverage each semester by the enrollment deadline. GSEC students who choose to enroll in the student health insurance plan pay insurance premiums directly to PacificSource, not to Lewis & Clark.
