Optional Practical Training

Optional practical training is designed to permit international students to gain practical experience in their major field of study, either before or after graduation.

Most international students find employment with a U.S. institution or company. Students who obtain permission to engage in practical training after graduation remain in F-1 student status, but may work legally and earn a salary.

Students who have a degree in the STEM fields are eligible to apply for a 24 month extension of their OPT period.
