International and TCK Student Orientation

Fall 2023

Note: Student volunteers helping with International Student/TCK new student orientation should meet for training on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at 7:00 pm. Fowler Student Center, Room 244.

Monday, August 28, 2023 (Arrival Day)

9 a.m. — 5 p.m.
New students arrive throughout the day. Transportation provided by International Students and Scholars (ISS).  L&C Drivers: Brian White/ISS and Lisa Kosiewicz Doran/ISS; L&C Student Greeters: Alvina Sargsyan (AM), Nuria Kiesebrink-Pareick (PM) and Diego Zarate (Late night). We will meet flights throughout the day. Emergency TEL: 503-768-7305 (Office of International Students & Scholars). Students arriving on campus may move into their rooms anytime after 9:00AM. Students report to International Students and Scholars (ISS) to pick up packets, room keys, access cards, and linen (if needed).

Students settle into their rooms. The following student volunteers will be on hand to help new students move into their rooms: Diego Zarate, Venezuela; Savannah Bishop, US/Hungary/Ghana; Rocio Yao, US/Argentina; Hashim Salman, Jordan; Orungul Sagynbaeva, Kyrgyzstan; Sara Santos, Portugal; Maryam Al Ghezi, Iraq; Nick Ni, China; Indigo Araya Rodriguez, Costa Rica; Santiago Longhino Gonzalez, Italy/Mexico; Nuria Kiesebrink-Pareick, Germany; Alvina Sargsyan, Armenia. ISS staff members Paola Dennis will also assist. Students can visit International Students and Scholars (ISS) to call home and inform parents of safe arrival. Snacks will be available at International Students and Scholars (ISS) office. Students collect Lewis & Clark ID cards at ISS Office after settling in. 

11:45 a.m. — 1:00 p.m. (Note: Volunteers should stagger lunch times)
Lunch for students who have arrived. Sara Santos and Hashim Salman will be at the door of Fields Dining Room at 11:45 a.m. to orient students to the dining room. Fowler Student Center, Fields Dining Room.

1:00 p.m. — 4:00 p.m.
Students stop by International Students and Scholars to complete several tasks:

  • Waive the L&C health insurance plan, if you have private insurance. Savannah Bishop will assist. Insurance waiver system can be found at:

  • Take a logistical tour of Fowler Student Center & Mailroom. Meet inside in the ISS Office. Stop by the Student Accounts Office, Health Center etc. and the mailroom. Tours at: 1:30, 2:00, 2:30, 3:00, 3:30. Rocio Yao and Nick Ni will alternate leading the tours.
  • Visit the Lewis & Clark Bookstore. If you need snack food, toiletries or want to start browsing for textbooks, learn where the bookstore is and make your purchases this afternoon. Open until 5:00 p.m.

4 p.m. - 5 p.m.
Tour of Campus led by Alvina Sargsyan, and Maryam Al Ghezi. New students should bring an umbrella/rain jacket if rain seems likely. After the tour, proceed to Campus Safety for ID pictures (for students who still need ID cards). Meet outside in front of Bookstore.

5:00 p.m.
Dinner. Santiago Longhino Gonzalez and Orungul Sagynbaeva meet at the door of Fields Dining Room at 5:00 p.m. to orient students to the dining room. Fowler Student Center, Fields Dining Room.

Evening

Meet Late Arrivals at Portland Airport and Accompany to Campus: Diego Zarate.

Meet Late Arrivals and help with dinner and move-in: Indigo Araya Rodriguez, Savannah Bishop and Maryam Al Ghezi.

Please bring the following items with you: your orientation packet and your passport.

Hashim Salman and Sara Santos will explain tasks you need to complete as you arrive.

  • Collect manila envelopes for passports (Sara Santos and Orungul Sagynbaeva). Students who forget the passport can bring it to the ISS later in the day.
  • Copy passports. (Sara Santos and Orungul Sagynbaeva will copy the documents at ISS).

  • Session 2, 11:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Safety Issues and Getting Connected. (Locations: Safety Issues group - Council Chamber; Getting Connected group - Stamm East) Safety: Rocio Yao, and Diego Zarate; Getting Connected: Alvina Sargsyan, and Nick Ni.

12:00 p.m. — 12:15 p.m.
Meet with Campus Living staff, Area Directors (ADs) and Resident Advisors (RAs). Council Chamber. ADs and RAs will meet with students in groups:

Student Meetings.

  • ISLC meeting (for international students). Meet Lisa Kosiewicz Doran, ISLC Advisor, and learn about the ISLC. Council Chamber.
  • TCK meeting (for US TCKs). Meet Savannah Bishop, TCK Intern, and learn about the TCK group. Fowler Student Center Room 237.

1:00 p.m. — 3:15 p.m. AES English Proficiency Test (Keck Interactive Learning Center, Miller Hall)

2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Test A Administration for UG students who have not taken it and drop-in advising for UG students regarding AES courses (Albany Hall, AES Offices Room 104)

2:00 p.m. — 3:00 p.m.
Students who arrived in the evening on Monday should stop by International Students and Scholars to complete several tasks (Fowler Student Center tour, waive the L&C health insurance plan etc.) with Orungul Sagynbaeva.

Other students can join an optional walk in Tryon Creek State Park. Nuria Kiesebrink-Pareick and Santiago Longhino Gonzalez will meet students in front of the Bookstore.

2:00 p.m. — 3:00 p.m.
Language Assistants and Dallaire Scholar J-1 SEVIS Validation. Language Assistants (LAs) and J-1 Dallaire Scholar should meet Brian White, Associate Dean, for SEVIS registration. Please bring your passport and DS-2019 form. Fowler Student Center, Room 243/International Students and Scholars.

3:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Sexual Health and Consent Culture as an international student. Council Chamber. Session led by Diego Zarate and Indigo Araya Rodriguez.

3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Open a bank account. Representatives of US Bank will be on campus to help international students set up a bank account. Please bring your passport and your visa with you. Volunteer: Maryam Al Ghezi and Indigo Araya Rodriguez will direct students to this session and help with copying. Council Chamber.

5:00 p.m.

Dinner. Take one of your new friends to dinner with you and meet Nick Ni and Rocio Yao, at the door. Fowler Student Center, Fields Dining Room.

5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Fred Meyer Store Visit

Visit Fred Meyer Store to shop for your room OR relax and get some rest after your moving day. Sara Santos and Diego Zarate. Meet in Fowler parking lot near the elevator.

6:00 p.m. — 7:00 p.m.
(OPTIONAL) 
Take a break and play frisbee. Student Assistants: Hashim Salman, Alvina Sargsyan, and Santiago Longhino Gonzalez. On the Glade Lawn. The lawn is in front of Pamplin Sports Center .

8:30 p.m.
(OPTIONAL)
 Games Night. Come play cards and board games. Hosted by Savannah Bishop and Nuria Kiesebrink-Pareick. Akin Hall Lounge.

Also, remember to check your inbox for an email from your RA with an invitation to a floor meeting. Check the email for the time and location. 

9:00 a.m. — 10:00 a.m.
SEVIS/Immigration Requirements and Review of the General NSO Schedule: What you must know! Lisa Kosiewicz Doran. Council Chamber.

  • ISS staff and volunteers will return the passport to you at the meeting. Topics for this session include:
    • SEVIS requirements
    • Immigration obligations. (See handout)
    • Review of General NSO Schedule

10:00 - 10:30 a.m.
Break.

10:00 - 10:30 a.m.
REQUIRED Measles Clinic for remaining new undergraduate international & TCK students who have not met the Oregon measles requirement. Students will be escorted to the Health Service for consultation and vaccinations. Student volunteer Hashim Salman as well as ISS staff will guide new students from the ISS office to the Health Service. Students will be un-enrolled from classes if this measles vaccination requirement is not met. Fowler Student Center/Health Service, lower floor.

10:30 a.m. — 12:00 p.m.

The International Student/TCK and Academic Success. Panel discussion with Lewis & Clark professors and students. Speakers: (in order) Nick Ni/Senior, Diego Zarate/Junior, and Rocio Yao/Senior followed by Professor Suparna Chaudhry of International Affairs, professor Julio de Paula of Chemistry and professor Pauls Toutonghi of English. Christabel Léonce staff member of the Counseling Center, will share some ideas about balance and time management. Council Chamber.

10:30 a.m. — 2:00 p.m. For AES students only (lunch provided)
Academic English Studies Orientation.
Students beginning their studies in the Academic English Studies program should go to this session for specific orientation about the AES schedule, advising system, registration, and other important policies. Refer to schedule provided by AES. Albany Hall, Room 207

12:00 p.m. — 1:00 p.m.
Lunch in Fields Dining Room/Fowler Student Center.  

1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Davis Scholarship Information Session. New Davis Scholars should attend this session to learn the details of the Davis Scholarship at Lewis & Clark. Attendance is required for new Davis Scholars. Lisa Kosiewicz Doran, Brian White, Anastacia Dillon and Karen Fobert will present. JR Howard, Room 102.

2:00 p.m. — 3:00 p.m.
Employment Session.
(REQUIRED ONLY FOR STUDENTS WHO PLAN TO WORK ON CAMPUS) What you need for on-campus employment. Lisa Kosiewicz Doran, Associate Director of ISS, Jordan Latt, Student Employment Coordinator and Paola Dennis, Admin Specialist of ISS. Student volunteer Nuria Kiesebrink-Pareick will assist. JR Howard, Room 102.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Applying for an on-campus job.
  • Applying for a Social Security Number.
