NSO Schedule

Note:  Student volunteers helping with International Student/TCK new student orientation should meet for training on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at 7:00 pm in the office of International Students & Scholars in Templeton Center.

 

Monday, August 22, 2016 (Arrival Day)

9 a.m. — 5 p.m.
New students arrive throughout the day. Transportation provided by International Students and Scholars (ISS), Blue Star Charters & Tours, and White Van Shuttle (TEL 503-774-9755 or online at:  http://www.whitevanshuttle. com/). L&C Drivers: Brian White/ISS and Bridget Flaherty/ISS; L&C Student Greeters: Kodai Kubota and Rinyuda Promphrenrangsi. We will meet Delta/Northwest Airlines Flight 622 from Tokyo at 9:58 a.m. and other flights throughout the day.  Emergency TEL: 503-768-7305 (Office of International Students & Scholars).

Students arriving on campus may move into their rooms anytime after 9:00AM.

Students report to International Students and Scholars (ISS) to pick up packets, room keys, access cards, and linen (if needed).

Students settle into their rooms.  The following student volunteers will be on hand to help new students move into their rooms:  Armando Aispuro, USA; Vinaya Bharam, India;  Sergely Steephen Bokouende, Congo,  Shimpei Goto, Japan; Ronan Hall, USA; Sina Heng, Cambodia; Rishi Javia, India; Hongyi Jiang, China; Puthyda Keath, Cambodia; Sarah King, USA/Belgium, Kodai Kubota; Caihua Ouyang, China; Nick Ryan, USA/Japan. ISS staff members Carolyn Locke and Lauren Brown will also assist.

Students can visit International Students and Scholars (ISS) to call home and inform parents of safe arrival.

Snacks will be available at International Students and Scholars (ISS) office.

Students take ID card pictures after settling in.  Shimpei Goto, Rishi Javia, and Steephen Bokouende can accompany students to Campus Safety.

11:45 a.m. — 1:00 p.m.  (Note:  Volunteers should stagger lunch times)
Lunch  for students who have arrived.  Caihua Ouyang, Nick Ryan, and Sina Heng will be at the door of Fields Dining Room at 11:45 a.m. to orient students to the dining room. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.


1:00 p.m. — 4:00 p.m.
Students stop by International Students and Scholars to complete several tasks:

  • Take a picture for the ISS electronic screen. Ronan Hall and Kodai Kubota will assist with pictures.
  • Waive the L&C health insurance plan, if you have private insurance.  Sarah King will assist.  Insurance waiver system can be found at:
  • Take a logistical tour of Templeton.  Checkout your mailbox, find the ATM, stop by the SAAB Tutoring Office, etc.  Tours at:  1:30, 2:00, 2:30, 3:00, 3:30, 4:00 p.m. Armando Aispuro and Puthyda Keath will alternate leading the tours.
  • Get ID card at Campus Safety.

1:15 p.m. — 4:00 p.m.
Students who have not completed forms or vaccinations for the Student Health Center, please check in at the International Student and Scholars Office.  International Students and Scholars.

3:30p.m.
Open a bank account.  Representatives of US Bank will be on campus to help international students set up a bank account.  Please bring your passport and your visa with you. Volunteers:  Vinaya Bharam and Hongyi Jiang will direct students to this session and help with copying.  Council Chamber in Templeton Center.

Visit the Lewis & Clark Bookstore.  If you need snack food, toiletries or want to start browsing for textbooks, learn where the bookstore is and make your purchases this afternoon.  Open until 5:00 p.m.

5:00 p.m.
Dinner. Vinaya Bharam, Puthyda, and Rishi Javia will meet be at the door of Fields Dining Room at 5:00 p.m. to orient students to the dining room. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.

5:45 p.m.
Tour of Campus led by Steephen Bokouende, Hongyi Jiang, and Ronan Hall. New students should bring an umbrella if rain seems likely. After the tour, proceed to Campus Safety for ID pictures (for students who still need ID cards).  Meet in front of Templeton Center (near Fields Dining Room).

Evening
Visit Fred Meyer Store to shop for your room OR relax and get some rest after your moving day.

Pioneer Express buses will leave campus for Fred Meyer at 7:40 and 8:38.  Returning buses will leave Fred Meyer for the return to campus at 8:24, 9:22 and 10:20. Don’t miss the last one!!!  Armando Aispuro, Nick Ryan, Sina Heng, and Rinyuda Promphrenrangsi.

8:45 a.m.  Continental Breakfast and Opening Program (Note:  You should NOT eat breakfast in Fields Dining Room this morning). Join us in the Council Chamber instead.   • Collect manila envelopes for immigration documents (Vinaya Bharam and Shimpei Goto). Students who forget the documents can bring them to the ISS later in the week.
  • Copy immigration documents. (Puthyda Keath , Steephen Bokouende and Rishi Javia will copy the documents at ISS).

English proficiency exam for international students. New students should go inside the J. R. Howard Hall lobby area near the SQRC and first-floor classrooms.  You will be given a name tag that tells you where to go for your exam.   Volunteers:  Rinyuda Promphrenrangsi and Hongyi Jiang (full time), Rishi Javia, Vinaya Bharam, and Shimpei Goto (part time). J.R. Howard Hall Front Lobby.

2:00 p.m. — 3:30 p.m.
TCK meeting (for US TCKs).  Meet Nick Ryan, TCK Intern, and learn about the TCK group.  Student Assistant:  Sarah King.  Trailroom, Templeton Center. 

5:00 p.m.
Dinner. Take one of your new friends to dinner with you and meet Armando Aispuro, Puthyda Keath, and Steephen Bokouende, at the door. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.

6:00 p.m. — 7:00 p.m.
(OPTIONAL) 
Take a break and play frisbee. Student Assistants:  Kodai Kubota, Rishi Javia, and Nick Ryan. On the lawn between Stewart, Odell and Akin.

Stamm West in Templeton Center.  Also, remember to check in with your RA this morning.  You will need to complete move-in paper work and sign up for the emergency registration system.  Do this with your RA sometime today before 3:00 p.m.  Student volunteers Caihua Ouyang, Sarah King, and Rinyuda Promphrenrangsi will help you find your packet.

SEVIS/Immigration Requirements and Review of the General NSO Schedule: What you must know! Bridget Flaherty. Templeton Student Center, Council Chamber.

ISS staff and volunteers will return the following to you at the meeting: (1) passport and (2) I-20. Topics for this session include:

  • SEVIS requirements
  • Immigration obligations. (See handout)
  • Review of General NSO Schedule

The International Student/TCK and Academic Success. Panel discussion with Lewis & Clark professors and students. Speakers:  (in order) Hongyi Jiang/ Sophomore, Steephen Bokouende/Sophomore, and Kodai Kubota/Junior, followed by Professor Jerry Harp of English and Core, Professor Anne Bentley of Chemistry, and Professor Kundai Chirindo of Rhetoric & Media Studies.   Dr. Jeanne Lily, staff member of the Counseling Center, will share some ideas about balance and time management. Alexa Jakusovszky of the College Honor Board, will discuss briefly Lewis & Clark’s academic integrity policy. Templeton Student Center, Council Chamber.

REQUIRED Measles Clinic for students who have not met the Oregon measles requirement.  Students will be escorted to Student Health Services for consultation and vaccinations. Student volunteers and ISS staff will guide new students from the AES Office to the health center.  Students may not register for classes until this measles vaccination requirement is met. Student volunteers Mami Onishi and Priscilla Chan can show you where to go.  Templeton College Center/Student Health Services, lower floor.

Academic English Studies Orientation Session and Test B Results. 
Students beginning their studies in the Academic English Studies program should go to this session for specific orientation about the AES schedule, advising system, registration, and other important policies.  Miller 105.

2:00 p.m
Davis Scholarship Information Session.
  New Davis Scholars should attend this session to learn the details of the Davis Scholarship at Lewis & Clark.  Attendance is required for new Davis Scholars. Bridget Flaherty, Brian White, Anastacia Dillon, Karen Fobert and Cheri Blatner will present.  J.R. Howard Hall, Room 202.

3:00 p.m.
Language Assistants and Dallaire Scholar J-1 SEVIS Validation.  Language Assistants (LAs) should meet Brian White, Associate Dean, for SEVIS registration. Please bring your passport and DS-2019 form.  Templeton Student Center, 3rd Floor/International Students and Scholars.

Employment Session.
(REQUIRED ONLY FOR STUDENTS WHO PLAN TO WORK ON CAMPUS) What you need for on-campus employment.
