Chemistry Professor Awarded $297,000 NSF Grant

Professor of Chemistry Nikolaus Loening was recently awarded a $297,000 research grant by the National Science Foundation to support studies related to the “molecular underpinnings of life.” Loening’s combined grant efforts have aided the college in purchasing a new 600 MHz NMR Spectrometer, built to study a wide range of chemical and biological processes.

Historic Vietnamese Portland Podcast Now Available Online

Portland has one of the highest per-capita Vietnamese populations in the country, yet Lewis & Clark is the first academic institution to develop an archive documenting their history. Two Lewis & Clark students organized scores of interviews from the Portland Vietnamese population into a five-episode podcast series about coming to America, finding a home in Portland, education, making a living, and social activism.

Hispanic Studies Professor Recognized for Teaching Excellence

Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies Magalí Rabasa has received the Arnold L. and Lois S. Graves Award. The grant will allow Rabasa to pursue research on feminist economies of knowledge in the Americas over a two-year period. This summer, she will travel to New York to conduct research in the Interference Archive, a space that catalogues the cultural production of social movements.

Chemistry Professor Unlocks Sixth NSF Grant

Professor of Chemistry Louis Kuo has been awarded a $249,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. The grant will fund Kuo’s ongoing student-supported research into environmental toxin remediation and phosphorus recovery. The research he and his students are doing aims to better degrade neurotoxins found in pesticides and chemical weapons.
