Fall Break: Explore Crater Lake & Central Oregon

Thursday, October 12 - Sunday, October 15, 2023
Signup Begins: Friday, September 8, 2023

This trip heads east, into the “rain shadow” of the Cascade Mountains to explore the beautiful high-desert landscape that few people associate with Oregon. The mossy forests near Portland give way to sagebrush and juniper trees, Ponderosa pines, and sunshine. We’ll stay in a comfortable lodge near the Deschutes river south of Bend, Oregon, and spend the days enjoying some great hikes. If people are interested, we may also hike at the world famous Smith Rock State Park, the location of some amazing rock formations, and weather permitting (early snow can close the road) we plan to visit stunning Crater Lake National Park for a day. You can get one credit in PE/A 101 “Outdoor Adventures” for participation during this trip as long as you register before the end of Add/Drop.

Fall Break: Backpack the Dry Side of Mt. Hood

Explore the “rain shadow” of the Cascade mountains, on the eastern side of Mt Hood where the weather is normally dry and sunny, even in October! You’ll hike through the Badger Creek Wilderness, exploring the forest, rivers, and spectacular views. Each day we’ll hike through this remarkable landscape carrying everything we need on our backs, and sleep in tents at night. While no previous experience is necessary, backpacking can be rigorous, and participants must be able to carry 50+lbs on their back for the duration of the trip. You can get one credit in PE/A 101 “Outdoor Adventures” for participation during this trip as long as you register before the end of Add/Drop.
