Lewis & Clark Law School to Host Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and Justice Anthony Kennedy at Federal Judicial Center Conference

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy and retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor are among the keynote speakers scheduled at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Federal Judicial Center, hosted by Lewis & Clark Law School in September. This landmark conference will feature an unparalleled array of jurists and scholars.

Natural Resources Law Institute Distinguished Visitor

Duke law professor Chris Schroeder will present the 21st annual Natural Resources Law Institute Distinguished Visitor lecture on September 25. Entitled “Moving the 21st-Century Environmental Agenda: Lessons From the Environmental Decade of the 1970s,” the lecture is free and open to the public.

Major PEAC Victory

The Pacific Environmental Advocacy Center (PEAC), the law school’s environmental law clinic, won a nationally significant victory this summer when the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals struck down an exception to the federal Clean Water Act that allows ships to discharge ballast water without safeguards to prevent introductions of invasive species. This is yet another victory for PEAC, which National Jurist calls one of America’s “winningest clinics.”

Dean Seeks to Reform Class-Action Lawsuits

For four years, Robert Klonoff, dean of Lewis & Clark Law School, has been working with a handful of top legal scholars, judges and practitioners from across the country on a project designed to improve the legal process of class action lawsuits. Health Law Visitor

Professor Barbara Safriet, a former member of the Lewis and Clark faculty, a former Associate Dean at Yale Law School, and a nationally recognized scholar on Health Law, will join the law school faculty as a visitor in the Spring semester, 2009. Professor Safriet will teach a basic course on Health Law and a specialized seminar.
