Julio de Paula was appointed Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in May 2005. Born in Brazil, de Paula came with his family to the United States in 1976 in what he describes as “the traditional immigrant story: we came in search of a better life.” He earned his bachelor’s degree from Rutgers, his master's from the State University of New Jersey, and his doctorate from Yale University. He was awarded a National Institutes of Health Fellowship to conduct postdoctoral work at Michigan State University.
Before joining Lewis & Clark, de Paula was also the Knapp Visiting Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts at the University of San Diego. His research in photosynthesis and nanotechnology has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, Research Corporation, and David and Lucille Packard Foundation. He has taught courses in general, physical, and biological chemistry, as well as writing. His textbooks of physical chemistry, coauthored with Professor Peter Atkins of Oxford University, are adopted widely by universities around the world.
Dean de Paula is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society, the American Chemical Society, the Council on Undergraduate Research, and the American Conference of Academic Deans. He is also a consultant for the National Science Foundation and several private foundations.
