Cap and Gown Pickup

Commencement Day

Graduates need to arrive at Fields Dining Hall in Templeton Student Center at 9:00 a.m. for Commencement check in and line up.

Formation for Processional - 9:45 a.m.

Formation occurs inside Fields Dining Hall.  Graduates will be assembled in lines for the processional by faculty members who serve as marshals. The marshals will check the list and cross off names of anyone not present so that no one's name is called if they are not in attendance. The Registrar, Curt Luttrell, will be available to check the pronunciation of names. This takes one solid hour. Students who are not in line for the formation will not be on the list to be called at the ceremony.

The Processional - 10:00 a.m.

Follow the instructions of the faculty marshals. A bag piper leads the students, who are followed by the faculty and the platform party.

Conferring of Degrees

Following the commencement address, the Dean of the Graduate School will "present" the class. He will ask all the graduates to stand, and then the graduates will be asked to come forward to receive their degrees.

Graduates will come forward by programs in rows. The faculty marshal will instruct each row when it is time to proceed towards the stage. When you are next to be called, stop at the Podium of the Name Caller until your name is called.

As soon as your name is read, proceed across the stage to the faculty member who is hooding the graduates. Turn to face the audience and the faculty member will hood you.

Next, the Dean will shake your hand. Then a photographer will take your picture as  the College President hands you your diploma. Proceed across the stage to receive the congratulations of the commencement speaker and a member of the board of trustees.

Finally, proceed down the steps where another photo will be taken and you will be directed to your seat by the faculty marshal.

When you return to your seat after receiving your degree, remain standing until all graduates have received degrees. At that time, all the graduates will be seated.

Returning Caps and Gowns

After the graduation ceremony, please return your cap, gown, and hood to the Jostens representative who will be in the Thayer Room in Templeton to collect them.

Reception

A short reception will be held immediately after graduation in Fields Dining Hall, or the Manor House lawn if weather permits. We hope that your family and friends will join you there.

The 2010 Commencement Student Speaker

Graduate Student Commencement Speaker applications are due March 31.

The student who is chosen will represent a student perspective for all graduates on this important day in your lives. We would like to encourage any and all students who think that they might like to be the student commencement speaker to step forward. The final speech will only be 3 minutes long on Commencement day.

Specifically, if you are interested, you should develop a sample in writing of what you might say in a student commencement speech and submit it to the Dean's Office by March 31. This does not have to be a formal, final speech at this time, but rather a draft that will give us an idea of what you might develop into a final speech. Each student with a submission will present their speech idea to a graduate school panel composed of faculty, students, and staff. The panel will choose the student commencement speaker from among those who submitted drafts to us.

We hope you will seriously consider drafting a proposal for consideration by March 31. We have had many outstanding student commencement speakers over the years. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Janet Bixby Associate Dean of the Graduate School at (bixby@lclark.edu)
