Shweta Jhaveri is one of the celebrated performers of Indian vocal music in the 21st century. Her specialty is the North Indian classical vocal form ‘Khayal’. A musician par excellence, she is acclaimed as one of the most innovative Indian vocalists and a sparkling talent in World Music today.
Presently in her 30’s, Shweta is the founder of ‘Cosmic Khayals’, a music publishing company since 1998, presenting her lyrics and compositions under her record label ’21st Century Cosmos’. At 19, she became the first female vocalist from Gujarat-India to perform vocal classical music in India and abroad. She is also a pioneering Indian classical vocalist, recording and appearing in live concerts with western musicians.
Lewis & Clark College is proud to present this concert with Kalakendra, the Society for the Performing Arts of India. Kalakendra was founded in February 1987 to promote and increase awareness of the performing arts of India by presenting that culture’s finest musicians and dancers to Portland audiences. As a voluntary non-profit organization, Kalakendra has been successful in presenting over 150 concerts and educational activities to date. Kalakendra members enjoy free admission to most concerts.
