New Awards to Garrick Imatani
Garrick Imatani, Assistant Professor of Art and Studio Head of Foundations, has recently received three significant grants and awards—from the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC), the Oregon Arts Commission (OAC), and The Ford Family Foundation (TFFF). More information about each is as follows:
RACC Award – Imatani and collaborating poet Kaia Sand will be inaugural artists for a unique public project jointly established by the City of Portland Archives & Records Center (PARC) and Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) with funding by Percent for Art. This residency-based project will take place at the PARC, which is located on the campus of Portland State University. The $25,000 award will support fabrication fees for a broad range of material works, public programming, and installation costs. The project intersects research, poetry, art and activism as Imatani and Sand plan to engage the Watcher Files, a series of surveillance documents collected by the Portland Police Bureau on various activist groups over a 30-year span.
OAC Award – Garrick received a $1,500 Oregon Arts Commission Career Opportunity Award to support residency opportunities at both the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City, Nebraska and the Ragdale Foundation artist residency program in Lake Forest, Illinois. He completed the Kimmel Harding Nelson residency in February, and will be at the Ragdale Foundation this month (March). This competitive grant program enables individual Oregon artists to take advantage of “unique opportunities” to enhance their careers. This is Imatani’s second Oregon Arts Commission grant; the first was received in April 2012.
TFFF - Through OAC’s partnership with The Ford Family Foundation, Imatani was awarded an additional $865 to offset expenses associated with the creation of larger scale works. The Ford Family Foundation funds were awarded to just ten mid-career visual artists in Oregon. The Opportunity Grants are one of seven program facets launched in 2010 as part of The Ford Family Foundation’s $3.5 million, five year visual arts program established in the memory of Mrs. Hallie Ford to assist Oregon’s most promising visual artists.
