Lewis & Clark named one of Sierra Club’s top 5 sustainable schools

Lewis & Clark earns national recognition as one of Sierra Club’s top 5 sustainable schools.

For the third year in a row, Sierra magazine has named Lewis & Clark one of its top “Cool Schools,” a list that honors America’s greenest colleges and universities. Lewis & Clark is the only school in the Pacific Northwest to be included on the 2014 list.

From classes in environmental studies to student-run gardens, Lewis & Clark integrates sustainability at every level. This commitment helped move Lewis & Clark up 14 places on this year’s Sierra Club list of 173 colleges and universities, from No. 19 in 2013 to No. 5 in 2014.

“From exemplary teaching to innovative programs in areas such as environmental education and overseas study, all grounded in the faculty’s close collaboration with our students, Lewis & Clark is receiving ever more national recognition as a leader in liberal arts education for the 21st century,” President Barry Glassner said.

The Sierra Club rankings are based on surveys that track categories including energy supply, water usage, food, research, curriculum, learning outcomes, purchasing, transportation, waste management, financial investments, and innovation.
