New Media
We make and manage websites and web applications for Lewis & Clark, like this very website, the search engine, the Green, and the Source.
If you want, you can fill out that form you think we need, or you can email us.
By the Numbers…
-
13,000+
This is the average number of people that visit www.lclark.edu each day. We keep the server humming along delivering content 24/7 on a hefty virtualized server supplied by IT.

-
3
This is the current number of virtualized servers we administer on campus and in Dallas, Texas. We do the system administration for all our servers, installing software, and keeping them running smoothly using conventional open source software.

-
3
This is the number of web content management systems (CMS) we manage in some fashion: LiveWhale, CourseLeaf and MyLC. If you’re thinking of purchasing a web-based system with which the public will interact, we can help with selection and consultation.

-
9
This is the number of custom web applications that we’ve written custom code for and currently manage: login, search, directory, the green, the source, stelter data, go url shortener, a visit scheduler, and our LiveWhale API.

-
19
The current number of code repositories we have at github.com for tracking and maintaining the code we own, write or otherwise manage. Code repositories keep our code backed up, easily deployable and versioned.

-
14
This is the current number of subdomains of lclark.edu that we manage: www, college, graduate, law, login, search, apps (directory, green, source), m, docs, future-docs, inside, media, blogs, on.
-
9
The number of web related languages, libraries, frameworks, databases or structures we work in regularly: PHP, Ruby (Ruby on Rails), javascript (Node.js, jQuery), CSS, semantic HTML, MySQL, Redis and occasionally PERL.

-
0
This is (roughly) the number of people making changes to the website right now. Of our 945 total LiveWhale users, 10 have been active in the last 90 days and our top five users are: Tabitha Ponciano (1020), Ben Whitehead (977), Emily Miller (804), Jonah Geil-Neufeld (555) and Brooke Mill (428).

-
65
This is the number of answers, screencasts and tutorials available in our DIY help. Have a suggestion for something you’d like to see there?
-
3-to-5
This is the number of people working in new media. In PubCom/New Media, David W. McKelvey is the head dude, ably backed by LiveWhale master Morgan Grether and programming guru Robb Shecter. If you’re at the Law School, be sure and find designer/developer Lawrence Siulagi. At the Graduate School, Hanna Neuschwander doubles as a great web mistress.
-
$0
We run open source software when possible, so New Media has spent nothing on web server software in the last three years. Even with our commercial content management system LiveWhale, we are a beta-tester and saved Lewis & Clark the last-we-knew-about-it $85,000 purchase price.
-
18
This is the number of days since any of our sites crashed for any reason. In this last instance, the search engine was down as a result of growing pains as we prepare to launch the new search engine.
-
0
We regret that this is the number of iPhone/Android apps we’ve written so far — check back to see this number change.
-
8
This is the number of major open projects on which we are actively working. Admittedly it’s a lot, but we’re always looking to stay atop the needs of our users, so don’t hesitate to contact us with your great idea.

-
1.5
This is the number of standing desks in our offices. (Yes, really.)
-
16
This is the number of toys we have in our offices, which is one better than CSUMB Web Services. However, they have a Tricorder.
