Financial Aid - International Students
Link to Financial Aid Fact Sheet
Lewis & Clark College seeks a student population which is culturally, economically, socially and geographically diverse and the institution works to support students who would not otherwise have the resources to enroll. International students who can demonstrate financial need may be eligible to receive financial aid. Funds are limited. Approximately 45 awards are made to new international students each fall. The average award in the 2012-13 academic year was approximately $23,700. No “full cost” financial aid awards are available. (The only exception to this policy is for applicants from United World Colleges).
Students must be applicants to the College before financial aid applications are considered. Financial Aid forms may be submitted along with the application for admission, or at a later date.
It is important for students to understand the circumstances concerning financial aid. Financial aid funds for international students at most U.S. colleges and universities are scarce. While Lewis & Clark prides itself on international diversity and a strong international student body, we too are faced with the task of managing a limited financial aid budget.
Students who are granted financial aid (which can only be applied towards tuition/fees) are still required to provide funds for room, board, books, vacations, and personal expenses as well as at least half of their tuition. Students need at least $30,000 to cover this cost. On average, international students who receive aid pay approximately half of their tuition. Tuition and fees for the 2012-2013 academic year are $38,500; room and board are $9,928; health insurance, which is mandatory unless you already have coverage, is $1,588; and, books, transportation, and personal expenses are estimated at $3,500. Thus, the total expenses are: $53,515. Please be advised that we do not award full financial aid awards. (The only exception to the policy is for applicants from United World Colleges).
The deadline for financial aid applications for the fall semester is January 15. Notification is given on April 1. Though students may apply for financial aid awards at any time during the year, funds are rarely available after decisions are made in April.
International students are eligible for merit-based scholarships. These scholarships include the Neely, Trustees, and Dean’s scholarships. Lewis & Clark does not award athletic scholarships. A number of named scholarships are designated for international students only.
For more information on how we determine financial aid awards, see our financial aid fact sheet.
