Circuit Court of Appeals case, Allegheny Defense Project v Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), overturning 50 years of precedent. Ellen Gilmer, is the journalist who wrote a Bloomberg article analyzing the court’s decision.

Lewis & Clark Law School announced today that Arthur Haubenstock has been appointed Executive Director of the Green Energy Institute (GEI), and will oversee the Institute’s work to support the transition of the Pacific Northwest and western region toward a 100% clean energy system. Professor Melissa Powers, who founded GEI in 2013, will continue to serve as Faculty Director, working closely with Arthur, staff attorney Amelia Schlusser, and the Institute’s Fellows to further GEI’s mission.

Alumna Awarded EPA Award for Environmental Educators

Anne McHugh BA ’10 has been awarded the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2019 Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators for her work as a science teacher at Portland’s Franklin High School. One of only 11 winners nationally of the highly competitive award and the only winner selected from the Pacific Northwest region, her teaching spans from arachnid biodiversity to aquaponics systems, allowing students to collaborate in innovative research with NASA.

Earthrise Scores a Win to Save Endangered Condors

In a hard-fought Ninth Circuit case, Earthrise Law Center at Lewis & Clark Law School recently prevailed in a suit against the US Forest Service under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) for failing to stop the disposal of lead ammunition in Arizona’s Kaibab National Forest. The lead from the ammunition used by hunters poisons the remains of animals that have been shot, thereby killing or injuring critically endangered condors that scavenge in the area.

Early this spring, Lewis & Clark Law School’s inaugural Wyss Scholar, Cooper Rodgers ’19, invited two undergraduate students studying environmental sciences at state colleges in California to visit the law school and learn about career paths in environmental law. “Getting Things Done: Careers in Environmental Law for Natural Resources Majors” was developed by Cooper and funded by the Wyss Small Grants Program, which is part of the Wyss Scholars Program.

He returned to Malaysia this past summer to double the number of lights and solar panels, and expand to an additional village in the area. An Entrepreneurial Approach to Environmental Justice

The Lewis & Clark Law School Environmental Law Moot Court team advanced to the semi-finals of the 2017 national competition for the 12th consecutive year. The team of Kathryn Roberts (3L), Amy Saack (3L), and Rachel Briggs (2L), coached by Prof. Craig Johnston, knocked out the University of Vermont and the University of New Mexico in the quarter finals. Lewis & Clark has won the national competition 7 times. Roberts calls it “the most rewarding experience of my academic career.”

Earthrise Law Clinic files lawsuit seeking new toxic standards for Washington State waters

Today Earthrise filed a lawsuit on behalf of Oregon-based Northwest Environmental Advocates (NWEA) challenging EPA’s failure to respond to an 88-page petition submitted to the federal agency over three years ago, in October 2013. To overcome these limitations, the Center for Green Schools has launched a national action plan for educating for sustainability. Students execute Operation Lorax to enhance campus beauty

As a way of paying homage to a beloved Dr. Seuss book and to their own values, student group Mystical Groves used their entire budget to execute a project called Operation Lorax. The project involved enhancement of Lewis & Clark’s tree canopy, as well as the engraving of a large rectangular stone that states, “Unless someone like you cares a whole lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

For the sixth year in a row, Lewis & Clark students have earned a competitive grant from philanthropist Kathryn W. Davis’ 100 Projects for Peace Initiative. Over the summer, students Hannah McCain ’12 and Nima Mohamed ’15 will promote youth engagement for Somali girls living in Portland, Maine.
