Higher Education Student Affairs doctoral concentration now offered at the graduate school
Lewis & Clark’s Graduate School of Education and Counseling is expanding its Doctor of Education in Leadership degree program to include a sought-after concentration in Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA). Currently accepting applications for enrollment in its 2019 inaugural cohort, the HESA concentration is designed for:
- Professionals currently working in the field of higher education and seeking a terminal degree in order to move up into an upper-level position in the profession.
- Master’s level recipients with experiences in P-20 education, student affairs, and/or volunteer work, who are attracted to providing leadership in the areas of policy, student affairs, or other areas of higher education.
A key feature of the program is the explicit focus on the P-20 spectrum (preschool through graduate school), which pushes educational administrators to consider the full educational pipeline as they lead their institutions. The program centers on the analogy of needing to seamlessly “pass the baton” between P-12 and higher education, and students will have the opportunity to engage directly with the realities of the entire educational spectrum as they grow as leaders.
The HESA concentration aligns with the Department of Educational Leadership’s mission to be a rigorous environment where students, faculty, and staff are open to being uncomfortable, challenged, and, at times, wrong. This means current and rising leaders of postsecondary education are deliberate in challenging their assumptions about the system of higher education; acknowledge how practices and policies maintain and reproduce inequality on college campuses; and prepare for their role and responsibility to lead institutions toward educational equity.
