Welcome Victoria Heiduschke

Please welcome another new face at Watzek Library! Victoria is our Temporary Research & Instruction Librarian for spring semester. Get to know her in the short Q&A below.

Where are you from?
I grew up in Florida, but I’ve lived in five different states and two other countries besides the U.S.

What did you do before you joined Lewis & Clark?
Most recently, I was the Learning Commons Coordinator at the Valley Library at Oregon State University. I also had the pleasure of working in the libraries at Montana State University, Illinois State University, the University of Texas at Austin and also the University of Florida. Those positions were all in the preservation/conservation field.

What is your favorite spot on campus?
I’m too new to have one!

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I go for walks, spend time with my kiddo, and sew.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
There are way too many! Librarian was definitely not on the list, though. I decided librarianship was my future shortly after starting my first paid job in a library during my undergrad studies.

What was your favorite college course?
Technology & Structure of Records Materials, taught by Karen Pavelka at the University of Texas at Austin. I basically learned how all of the various things in libraries are made–cuneiform tablets, paper, papyrus, parchment, photographic negatives and prints, printing techniques and inks–and how they deteriorate.

What is your home library like? / Do you collect any particular types of books?
Actually, I’m very un-librarian in this sense. I don’t buy books–I just borrow them from the library. I mostly read historical fiction.

What is your favorite LC classification?
PZ 7! My first paid position in a library was in the youth services division at a public library in Florida. And Young Adult fiction is my go-to fun reading.

The staff are so helpful, friendly and inviting to all our patrons.
