All Day: Oregon Coast Hike 1
On the Central Oregon Coast lies an area of huge Sitka trees, ferns, cascading streams and waterfalls. We’ll hike through old growth forest to a secluded bay where we can watch sea lions. The seven-mile round trip hike traverses some of the most productive rainforest on earth, showcasing Oregon’s natural treasures.

October 2Phyllis Yes has worked as a multimedia artist for years, with materials ranging from jewelry to a hand-painted Porsche. Her first play, Good Morning, Miss America, is based on her own experiences caring for her aging parents. It made its New York premiere on October 2 at Theatre 80 St. Mark’s Place.

December 13Assistant Professor of History Reiko Hillyer has been awarded a grant from the Whiting Foundation to support the expansion of her interdisciplinary project, “Theatre From the Inside-Out: Illuminating Mass Incarceration.” Specifically, the grant will enrich Hillyer’s course Crime and Punishment in U.S. History, which she teaches at the Columbia River Correctional Institution in Portland.

November 8After spending the summer working with students and professors from around the country, three Lewis & Clark students return to campus with new skills and perspectives on how to use mathematics to create a solution to partisan gerrymandering. The six-week program is a collaboration of Tufts University, Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Over the summer, artist Abigail McNamara B.A. ’12 spent 11 hours at the entrance to downtown’s Portland Building. She carefully observed and recorded all comings and goings of the day, preparing to create an intricate installation for display in the building’s lobby.

August 14Each fall, College Outdoors organizes trips for incoming first-year and transfer students to bond with peers as they explore the mountains, rainforests, and rivers of the Pacific Northwest. This year, College Outdoors will offer 17 New Student Trips, the largest selection since the program began.
