28 November 2011 Letter from the President

In some of my earliest remarks to the Lewis & Clark community I noted that what drew me to the College were the people—faculty, staff, students, administrators, trustees, and alumni—and my experience has more than confirmed my view that assembled here is a truly extraordinary community dedicated to the enterprise of higher education. What I suspected was the case is indeed so: we are poised to become one of the best and most highly regarded institutions of higher learning in the nation.

To begin realizing that potential I charged the members of the 2011 Strategic Plan Working Group with determining strategic priorities, the achievement of which would lead us to the next level. The membership of that group and the six priorities they chose are available in “The Journey Forward for Lewis & Clark in the 21st Century: A Preliminary Roadmap.”

Now we embark on the next step forward. I have asked the members of newly constituted strategic priority work groups to devote the coming months to establishing priority-linked actionable goals and plans for achieving them. Coordinating their efforts will be Professor Rob Kugler (Director of Strategic Initiatives), Stephen Tufte (Associate Professor of Physics), and Janet Bixby (Associate Dean, Graduate School of Education and Counseling).

I hope that all members of the extended Lewis & Clark community will remain tuned to this planning process for the future and support our colleagues who are taking on the hard work of developing the plan. Please respond generously when they ask to hear your insights and your hopes and dreams for Lewis & Clark as we journey forward.

Best regards,

Barry Glassner
President and Professor
